Federal Income taxes are due, well, this year, April 17th, not the usual April 15th. But time is getting closer.

There’s a lot of help online if you need it, including:

  • AARP has an email form so you can ask a question.

  • AARP also has a page of FAQs (frequently asked questions) that may solve your problem.

  • Of course, the IRS has a site too; it’s massive, but fairly easy to navigate and worth a look.

  • You can file your taxes electronically at the IRS site too – for free.

However you get it done, now is the time to start preparing.

February is a great time to start thinking about your 2006 income tax. Sure, the filing date isn’t until April, April 17th this year. But if you want to take advantage of tax preparers, the earlier the better. Come April they will be swamped and exhausted.

The IRS lists resources for getting free assistance with your tax preparation. Some have income restrictions, others don’t.

Best known is AARP’s Tax-Aid; plug in your zip code and the chances are you’ll find the help you need. And if you are good at understanding numbers and tax code, you can volunteer to help others there too.

It doesn’t seem fair, but even in the middle of the holiday rush, it may make sense to do at least a little thinking about your taxes. The internet provides an amazing wealth of information about taxes. There are also more than a few scams out there. Here are some sources of tax information we trust.

Take a few minutes and review your tax situation; you'll be all set.
