The term, senior housing, covers a lot of territory – everything from Accessory Apartment to Senior Apartment. A good place to start investigating senior housing and how it might work for you is by learning some definitions.

Sharon O'Brien, About.com’s Guide to Senior Living, has put together a good glossary of senior housing terms. You’ll find most of the terms you’re likely to run into when investigating senior housing and definitions that make each term clear.

Once you understand the vocabulary, you’ll be in a much better position to decide if senior housing is for you or not.
Senior BofI is part of a larger organization named Bank of Internet USA. Gary Lewis Evans, President & CEO of BofI has written an open letter to prospective customers. In the letter he answers some typical questions about the bank like “are you a real bank?” and “how safe is internet banking?”

He also explains in simple language how the bank is regulated and how technology allows the bank to accept deposits from all 50 states and why technology saves money allowing the bank to pay good rates.

Gary also gives you a bit of his own banking history and offers his email so you can contact him directly.

Love to travel, but hate hotels? You’re not alone and there are some surprising solutions. AARP outlined some options which include:

Home exchange – you swap homes with someone in the place you want to travel to. Such swaps can be for a few days or as long as a year. It probably makes sense to work through a company like Intervac, although you can certainly find swaps on your own. Craigslist has a swap page in their real estate section. Check the city where you want to go.

There are people all over the world who offer a guest room in their own homes for sometimes surprisingly low rates. Again, it make sense to work through an agency like the Evergreen Club.

Of course, you may want to explore RVing. You can follow the tales of a couple on the road at Banking on the Road.

The idea of doing your banking online may seem odd at first. But it’s actually easy, and it stops you from having to “go to the bank” every time you want to make a deposit, transfer money or just check your accounts.

You start by setting up an account online – and there are many kinds of accounts to choose from. Deposits can be handled electronically and automatically – ideal for Social Security and other regular payments. Withdrawals can be made by check, ATM or through our FREE bill paying service.

We’ve got a friendly and professional customer service staff to help you by phone or email every step of the way.

Take advantage of the power and freedom of Internet banking at Senior BofI today.
We all know, at least in theory, that exercise is good for us. The trick, of course, is actually getting it done. AARP has teamed up with the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) to offer a wide variety of physical activities with the aim of introducing seniors to the idea it’s fairly easy and often fun to get active.

Part of the program includes listing age-friendly fitness facilities – a big consideration since most of us prefer not to exercise around a bunch of young, hard bodies.

Start with ICAA’s Active Aging Week page. Here, under Consumer Resources, you’ll find a description of the program and links to facilities, plus good information on what to look for in a gym, in a trainer and how to start a walking program.
Senior BofI offers checking accounts that not only have no service charges, but pay interest on your money from the first day it’s deposited. And you can open an interest bearing checking account for as little as $50.

If that isn’t enough, Senior BofI checking accounts also offer:

  • Free Bill Payment
  • Free ATM and debit (check) cards, for qualifying account holders
  • Free Internet or telephone banking anytime
  • Free postage-paid envelopes for mailing check deposits

Plus, we’ll even reimburse you up to $8 per month for any fees you incur when using other bank’s ATMs.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, aka HUD, has a site devoted to seniors and housing. It covers a lot of information, including:

  • Buying, selling and renting a home
  • Avoiding fraud
  • Repairs
  • Staying in your home

Each link provides at least an overview of the topic and often links to local resources through dropdown links. It also provides solid information about what sort of help HUD can offer seniors. Surprisingly, the site also links to a limited number of non-governmental sites.

The HUD site is a good place to check when you’ve got any housing issues at all.
Senior BofI offers a variety of ways to save your money, including Regular Savings, Money Market savings and Certificates of Deposit. Each has its own unique features.

September 11, 2001 brings up a slew of memories for all of us. All of us were changed by the experience.

National Public Radio has compiled a series of brief remembrances on their website called Six Lives Transformed by Sept. 11. It is only one example of such story sharing.

Each demonstrates the value of sharing our stories. Stories help us realize our humanness and how, in so many ways, much alike we all our as we share our love, grief and sadness.

Commercial real estate can be defined as any property that’s used or usable by a business or trade. Buildings like hotels, restaurant, industrial centers, retail property and office complexes fall under the broad definition of commercial real estate.

Investing in commercial real estate can often bring surprisingly good returns. Of course, all the fundamentals of investing in real estate must be observed. But if you’re considering investing in real estate you may want to include commercial real estate in your consideration.

Senior BofI, through Bank of Internet, offers commercial real estate loans in all 50 states. You can expect quick decisions from us and we will work to tailor such loans to your exact needs. Contact us about commercial real estate or any other banking need you might have.

Sunday, September 10 is Grandparents Day. Marian McQuade, a housewife in Fayette County, West Virginia, sparked the idea in the early 1970s. She had two goals:

  • to champion the cause of lonely elderly in nursing homes
  • to persuade grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their grandparents could provide

President Jimmy Carter made Grandparents day official in 1978, specifying that it would be celebrated each year on the first Sunday following Labor Day.

Grandparents Day is an ideal moment to find ways to share your experience and wisdom with your grandchildren.

The first Monday of September is celebrated as Labor Day in the United States. The origins of this holiday go back to a parade organized by Knights of Labor, an early union, the on September 5, 1882 in New York City.

This quote appears on the U.S. Department of Labor’s website:

"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country," said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. "All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation.
